You are "right on" when you describe Inspector Lynley's faux disregard for his title & status.
He may protest that he wants to be "one of the boys", but his lifestyle and attitude more than contradict that.
This dichotomy and multilayering is what makes the characters in this series so intriguing.

As I prepare to begin my blog on all things mysterious, I'm looking at many other blogs on the same subjects to see what I can learn, and ((legally) crib. I'll be back to yours many times, enjoyed this one, my first reading, since I'm a George reader/fan. I'm looking forward to future ones. I like your style . . . . I hope when my blog gets going (soon) you'll drop by. I'm looking for all the suggestions and advice I can get.

Thanks for your good work!

Thank you for the spoiler alert as I did not read anything about the book. I do have to agree, though, about Elizabeth George's writing talent of these delicious mysteries. We started to read them and instantly fell in love when we lived in Germany for two years, without a TV. These are WAY better than any TV show could ever make them. Yes, the books were made into a BBC show, but their depth gets lost as with so many other books made into movies. The characters, their relationships and undertones of friendship, love and despair make me look for the next book every time I put down the "last". So looking forward to the next.

Spot on analysis. It's George's delving into the flaws of her characters that keeps me coming back. This one is high on my summer reading list.
